Virtual Instructor-led Training

Background

The client wanted a virtual instructor-led course to help their systems administrators learn a new software application that can automate configuration management. The client had a backlog of systems that needed to be configured and the new software was proposed to help them clear that backlog.

Challenges

1) Finish the project in a very short time frame.

2) Coordinate with SMEs whose time was limited.

Common Mistakes

1) Apply a new template to existing SME-provided materials without ensuring accuracy, relevancy, or instructional soundness.

2) Rely solely on SME input to develop content without conducting independent research.

Approach

I researched the software application and meet with the SME to gain a better understanding and to help guide my research. I used the ADDIE model to guide my development. I created an outline that included estimated completion times for each lesson. I used Bloom’s Taxonomy and competency models to develop course objectives and to ensure course material was developed at the appropriate skill level. I included interactive polls, chats, and chances to ask the presenter questions to keep the learners engaged. We also created a video of how to use the software as a backup plan in case something went wrong with the live demonstration.
