Software Training

Background

Adventist Healthcare Systems was transitioning from a paper-based patient management system to a computer-based system. Every health-care provider and support staff were required to use the new system. They wanted a training program to ensure their employees could effectively use the system when it was rolled out.

Challenges

1) Finishing a large project in a short time frame.

2) Creating engaging, interactive courseware on a routine process.

3) Making the course content relevant for each role that would be using the new system.

4) Developing applications training on a system that was frequently changed during content development and WBT production.

Common Mistake

Create a huge user manual or several quick reference guides, but no guided training.

Approach

My team and I developed several role-specific, scenario-based, interactive, web-based courses on the various screens and system processes. For example, we developed courses for physicians, nurses, and radiologists.

After meeting with a subject matter expert and analyzing existing content, my team and I worked with subject matter experts to develop realistic scenarios and case studies for each role. Course content was presented through a mentor that walked the learners through a typical day on the job using the new system. Learners were shown how to complete different tasks then given the opportunity to try it out for themselves in a simulation. Learners were also given a chance to explore the different screens with explanations of the various buttons and functions.

Courses were prototyped in PowerPoint then imported to Adobe Captivate.
